The design of the Bonin 31 is performance-oriented: vertical bow, wide open stern, streamlined coachroof, sandwich construction in vacuum infusion. An interesting sports boat for short cruises and with good performance on the race fields.
Bonin is a small shipyard in Trieste but with a long experience in the construction of sailing boats, with particular attention to hulls with a sporty imprint, particularly good in regattas but not exclusively. The build quality is guaranteed by the attention of specialized craftmanship, combined with the use of innovative materials like fiberglass, kevlar and carbon. For the construction, the state of the art techniques are utilized: the hull and deck are vacuum infused ensuring a high percentage of active fibers (biaxial, UDR) of aeronautical quality with zero environmental impact. The hull structural liner is also vacuum infused, glued and laminated to the hull to make a single supporting structure distributing the mast, keel and rigging stresses. The joints are made of epoxy structural glue for bulkheads, hull and deck. The Bonin 31 has a distinctive, aggressive and, at the same time, elegant line, which summarizes the guideline concepts of design, speed and building quality of the brand, and she also has an excellent manoeuvrability in all wind conditions. The outboard chainplates, swept back of 20°, don’t prevent a wide passage from stern to bow, and a lot of attention is paid to the deck layout and the hardware positioning for easy and fast crew management. The cockpit is wide and studied to be both ergonomic and good for optimal internal and external volumes.
The interiors of Bonin 31 are essential, to guarantee the performance, but a lot of attention is paid to the details. With a beam of 3.35 m and the structural innerliner that includes part of the furniture, it was possible to use every centimeter of the available internal volume, ending up with a general height above average and extra-large dimensions of the cabins: in the bow with 1,70 x 2,18 m bed height 1,75 m, aft with 1,65 x 1,90 m bed 1.83 m height, therefore real double cabins. The toilet has a height of 1.83 m and make possible to install a shower. The big kitchen has enough space for the oven and the dinette; with a development of 3 metres, two benches from 1.85 m and a height of 1.84 m it is the boat’s true comfortable heart. The sail plan of Bonin 31 gives immediately a sample of her speed characteristics: 58 square meters overall of sail area upwind with a 35 sqm mainsail and a 105% jib of 22,3mq. It is an important sail plan if compared to the size of 31 ft and on just 3 tons of weight.
The result is a very fast boat with light winds. The appendages of Bonin 31 are perfect for heavy conditions balancing the sail plan with a T keel with bulb weighing near to 1 ton and a total draft of 2.15 m.
