Interview with Maurizio Cossutti about the V66
The Cossutti Design Studio handles the naval architecture of the V66 Cossutti: from the words of engineer Maurizio Cossutti, here is a picture of the design of the new fast cruiser’s naval architecture
MC – The project was born as an “open” collaboration: even though we handle the naval architecture – hull lines, sail plan, keel and helm, weights and stability tests – and the Vismara team works on the general concept, internal and external layout and on engineering, in practice we have a continuous exchange. Our contribution is bringing experience to the development of high-performing marine hulls: an aspect that unites us with Vismara Marine, and the V66 Cossutti was born from this dialogue.
Why did the shipowner prefer a custom vessel?
MC – The shipowner is an exacting sailor who uses the boat with their family year-round (even in challenging conditions), loves beautiful things but doesn’t want luxury for its own sake, giving the right value to choices and investments. They are part of an expert clientele, but also current with the times, which, as we observed during visits to the most recent salons, is a growing group that standard builders are unable to satisfy.
Could you tell us more about the technical aspects you are working on?
MC – We are working on a layout and features that make the vessel, more than 20 meters long, manageable with a small crew even in challenging conditions: hull shapes that contribute to stability, engineering that will replace the weight of a possibly-large crew in the gunwale (not wanted in this case), the deck and rigging that is designed to be simple and accessible, as sheltered as possible from wind and waves. We will also get a new concept of the lifting keel: deep enough to guarantee stability and generous ??, but also offering the possibility of comfortably entering roadsteads and ports when lifted.
An enjoyable ship in all respects…
MC – Yes, from sailing to mooring: a bow with “V” sections, in fact, guarantees good passage on waves whether using sails or the motor, while exits at the stern that are not flat, and are at a certain height from the water, avoid bothersome clunks on the hull when mooring.
How do you work, and with what instruments?
MC – Like all offices of advanced design, we develop the project entirely on three-dimensional model and this facilitates the dialogue with Vismara Marine and allows for optimal integration of the project from the beginning. Also, our study has performances between the highlights, therefore in recent in recent years we have invested in calculation and performance software, which we tested and developed with our work on regatta ships, and we use it for all of our projects.
